During the Great War, Field Marshal Earl Haig quickly rose to become Commander in Chief of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front. Though subject to adverse criticism in the wake of heavy casualties in 1916 and 1917, he was responsible for the final counter-offensive in 1918 that led to eventual victory for the Allies. This housing project is named after this World War I hero.

The Earl Haig Society was founded in the mid-1960’s by the Legions in the New Westminster District Zone to provide low cost housing for veterans. The original goal was to construct housing at each of the six branches in the zone however only Coquitlam (1965) and Maple Ridge (1967) actually built a facility. The original Maple Ridge site was located on Selkirk Avenue behind the Valley Fair shopping centre but was traded for a new location on Burnett Street in 1993. The new project boasts of 22 one bedroom units, a far cry from the bachelor suites at the old location.

The Earl Haig is located at 11821 Burnett Street in Maple Ridge, a short 1/2 block away from the Valley Fair Shopping Centre, London Drugs, Vancity Savings, Save-On Foods, Liquor Store, TD Bank, Starbucks, MacDonalds and numerous other amenities. Within a four block radius is the city centre, public library, aquatic centre, Haney Place Mall and a myriad of banks and services.

The site consists of 5 one level buildings housing 22 units. All apartments enjoy the same floor plan with a living room, dining area, bedroom, bathroom and storage room. Every unit has a front and back door. Coin operated laundry is located on site.

Rent is $716.00 –  damage deposit of $358.00 – this includes heat and light. The only extra expenses are telephone and cablevision.
